Principles of Computer Networks - Network Cabling

Telecommunications organisations and ISPs can provide two different levels of service when connecting to a network. For a leased line the customer leases time or bandwidth. However with a dedicated line the customer will pay for total ownership. satellite links form the basis of core high speed links between countries. They rely on a satellite in geosynchronous orbit. For shorter distances microwave links can be used, these links are popular for smaller businesses. Both these types of links must be in line of sight in order to function. Another method of transmission that uses high frequency radio transmissions and is limited to approx 100M is wireless. One problem with this type of transmission is that it is susceptible to noise produced by electrical power equipment
